The WAC covers the minimum testing requirements that need to be met for the disposal of hazardous waste to a hazardous landfill or non-hazardous waste to an inert landfill. If the waste does not comply with the relevant WAC, the landfill should not accept the waste.
Waste Acceptance Criteria testing needs to be undertaken once a waste (including soils) has been characterised as hazardous. WAC testing also needs to be done if a non-hazardous waste is to be disposed of to an inert landfill site. The Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) became mandatory in July 2005, meaning all organisations have a duty of care with regards to the disposal of hazardous waste. The Landfill Directive has rigorous standards on waste being disposed of to a landfill. Waste must first be accepted by the landfill site and therefore, Waste Classification and WAC Testing is required to satisfy the landfill operator that the waste material meets their permit conditions.
What is Waste Acceptance Criteria Testing?
WAC testing is used to determine how a waste will behave once it’s buried in a landfill. This is carried out primarily through analysis of leachate derived from that waste during laboratory analysis. It cannot be used to determine whether a waste is hazardous or not. Whether a waste is hazardous is dependent upon the Hazardous Waste Regulations and is established by reference to the Hazardous Waste List of the European Waste Catalogue.
